Makoto let out a sharp exhale, that echoed through the tunnels of Granite Cave, as they shoved the emptied Potion bottle into their bag. "There you go, Tsume." They murmured - smoothing out the zoroark's fur with their palm in a soothing gesture. "That should keep you on your feet a little longer..."

The fight they had gotten into not long ago had been a little closer than they would've otherwise liked. Though they packed plenty of healing items to help get the team back up on their feet, it wasn't a replacement for proper rest and recovery at one of the outposts and hideaways that Rocket had been setting up.

They needed to fall back to one of the safe zones at some point - they could see the rift just over their shoulder, leading into Ultra Deep Sea. Even if it wasn't the safest place - all things considered - Rocket likely had a camp somewhere in there...

... But, the distant sounds of people from the other direction - more than one, but that's all that they could tell from here - made their expression twist. Friends or foes, they weren't sure which - but the growl Tsume made implied his thoughts to be the latter. Which wasn't good news - Makoto's heart twisting with a hue of anxiety. They couldn't let anyone from League through - they were sure to get in trouble if they did - but their team was still tuckered from the previous fight.

A dilemma, to say the least. And all they could do was stand back up to face it - Tsume standing up alongside them with his claws readied and his fangs bared, and Kuro bringing but one of its many disguises back up around Makoto.

The League arrive first.[break][break]

Gavin steps from the Rift into the midst of a warzone, cursing as his Cryogonal narrowly intercepts an attack with its BANEFUL BUNKER, poisoning the Swellow that had swooped in to assail him.[break][break]

There's not much time to assess the situation beyond the fact that someone he doesn't recognize is being overwhelmed by League officers, which means they're on his side regardless. He steps up next to them without a word, releasing two more Pokémon.[break][break]

His Sandslash chills the cave with a vicious BLIZZARD, freezing one of their foes solid. Cryogonal sets up a LIGHT SCREEN, bolstering their defenses, and his Lucario scatters soothing LIFE DEW on their injured ally's team.[break][break]

"Rocket or civilian?" he asks them, curt.

A few league officers had shown up - and almost as soon as their eyes had met Makoto's own, a fight had started. Using three pokemon - Tsume, Tsukiko, and Haguru - they attempted to match the League's own pokemon on the field the best they could. But they were tired - and whereas the enemy pokemon each had a trainer to direct them, Makoto had to split their attentions between their own trio.

But, then came the sound of steps behind them - and one of the officers' pokemon, a Swellow, swooping past overhead only to be left reeling. Makoto only spared a brief glance back to see a Cryogonal - a fellow Rocket must have shown up. And yet... There was something off about the two pokemon - the cryogonal and alolan sandslash both - that joined their side of the field...

Life Dew rained down on the pokemon, however - and Makoto's pokemon visibly perked up from the healing offered. They were ready to continue the fight - and with Tsukiko throwing her head back in a howl, she'd set up an Aurora Veil to match with the snow from her Snow Warning, to better aid their new allies.

The other Rocket came up alongside Makoto - and they'd get a proper look at him now. And though they had never properly met him, well... It was hard to not recognize when an Underboss was in your presence. "Rocket, sir." They'd respond - attempting to shove down the sudden nervous feeling that rose up with Gavin's presence - before glancing back to their pokemon. "Night Daze! Klinklang, move back and prepare for a Zap Cannon!"

At Makoto's direction, Tsume would fire off a Night Daze, to hinder the accuracy of an enemy Medicham. And Haguru, meanwhile, would be using Lock On as they floated closer to the backlines of the fight - preparing for a Zap Cannon against the sizeable Blastoise that was also present.

Gavin is impressed by the quick synergy between the Ninetales and his Sandslash, whose SNOW CLOAK obscures it from view as a cold storm grips the battlefield. It offers aid in return, SAFEGUARD warding off any threat of status effects.[break][break]

The foe's Medicham tries to shatter the ice around its ally with BRICK BREAK, but fails on account of the Zoroark's NIGHT DAZE.[break][break]

Swellow stirs up a TAILWIND on the other side of the field, bolstering the speed of Blastoise's incoming EARTHQUAKE. Gavin's Lucario DETECTS the threat in time to leap to safety, but Sandslash growls in pain as earth cracks beneath it. Cryogonal, safe on account of its LEVITATION, seeks vengeance on the Blastoise with FREEZE-DRY.

The earthquake is one hell of a tremor - bits of stone and dirt falling from the ceiling of the cave in the wake of the Blastoise's wrath. Gavin's Sandslash was not the only one affected - though Haguru had been able to narrowly avoid it by floating upwards in their weird Klingklang-y ways, Tsume and Tsukiko both would be sent staggering; the fact that the Ninetales had set up an Aurora Veil but moments ago likely being a bit of saving grace in this scenario.

However, retaliations would come swiftly. The small face-gear of Haguru's would begin to glow and crackle, charging up with electrical energy - before a sudden blast of pure electricity was fired in the form of a Zap Cannon...! With Lock On to make the normally inaccurate move a sure-fire hit, it'd slam into the Blastoise - and between both that and the Freeze-Dry from Cryogonal, the turtle would collapse on the ground, to be returned to its pokeball.

In its place though, came an Arcanine. The fiery canine would snarl low - but rather than immediately attack, used a Howl to bolster its allies. Which the Medicham put to use right quick - once more attempting a Brick Break on the ice encasing its Ninjask ally, and managing to shatter it!

Broken free, the Ninjask went straight to being a nuisance - darting past Tsume and striking him with a sweeping X-Scissor!

Caught off guard, Tsume would be sent tumbling back from the one-two combo, breathing heavily as a result. Rather than risk him fainting here, Makoto would make the decision to switch him out - replacing the Zoroark with their Crobat, Nobusuma, instead.

Tsukiko meanwhile would target the Swellow - firing off an Ice Beam that managed to freeze one of the bird's wings. The avian, however, proved to be a nuisance of its own - using Roost to recover from the damage taken, between the Ice Beam and prior Baleful Bunker..

Stopping to ROOST turns out to be the downfall of the Swellow; as the POISON saps the strength it desperately tries to regain, Gavin's Lucario takes it down with an AURA SPHERE. Without the added Flying-type, the super-effective hit knocks the avian out cold.[break][break]

Unfortunately, the League trio have come prepared.[break][break]

A SALAMENCE takes the field, it's DRAGON TAIL forcing Lucario back into a Pokeball. The TYRANITAR that appears in its place summons a violent DARK SANDSTREAM of stinging black crystals, and the Medicham's attempts to clear it with SUNNY DAY only replaces the SNOWSTORM.[break][break]

Still, Arcanine capitalizes off the change in weather with a FLARE BLITZ aimed toward the Sandslash. Cryogonal intercepts with another show of its BANEFUL BUNKER, poisoning the canine and shielding the shrew from the flames.[break][break]

FRUSTRATION bubbles up in the shadow Pokémon, who lunges toward the dog and tries to tear out its throat. Though this endeavour fails, blood sprays into melting snow from opened wounds.[break][break]

Gavin notes growing concern in the faces of their enemies; their numbers were dwindling fast.[break][break]

A bright SOLAR BEAM strikes against the Tyranitar, who roars in challenge.

The sandstorm that whips up on the field, Makoto can immediately tell that it is an unusual one - even aside from the fact that it was caused by a Tyrannitar that looks more than a little off. The dark crystals bite into one's skin - and even Haguru seems affected by it, the klinklang making a noise like metal clashing against metal with the turn of their gears to express displeasure. And even as the enemy medicham tried to bring out an artificial sun with Sunny Day, the sandstorm didn't abate - instead, the air seemed to glitter in the wake of the shards that flew about them.

But neither did the fight abate.

As the Sandslash attempted to rip at the Arcanine - drawing more than just a little blood - Makoto is thankful for the illusionary mask that they're able to hide the alarm and shock that rises up behind. Certainly, they did not expect these fights to be anything like League-standard gym fights or spars between trainers... And yet, to see the blood spilt makes them unsettled, their breath hitching with a sudden spike of anxiety.

Hopefully, Gavin wouldn't notice a thing. Turning their focus back to the fight, Makoto shoved down the mankey part of their brain hooting in alarm at the sight of the blood steaming against the snow.

"Dazzling Gleam - focus the Salamence and Medicham!" Makoto called - and Tsukiko obeyed. Leaping forward, the ninetales would place herself between the fighting-type and dragon-type both - before, as if reflecting the artificial sun above, proceeding to let out a blinding flash of light! The enemy pokemon were left briefly staggered in the wake of this - excluding the medicham, who'd use Detect to avoid harm.

With the opportunity offered though, Nobusuma would engage the ninjask - resulting in an aerial dogfight, in the limit space offered by the cavern. Even as a Night Slash from the bug bit into Nobu - the prior Howl making it hurt all the more - the crobat was quick to retaliate with a flurry of Air Slashes that left the fragile bug-type teetering through the air. The Salamence took to the skies to try and support the Ninjask with another Dragon Tail - but Nobusuma would dive under the dragon to dodge this, wings beating hard.

The injured Arcanine, meanwhile, did not seem keen to immediately jump back to the fray again - and leaping to avoid a Charge Beam from Haguru, would instead use Howl to continue supporting the group.

TLDR

- the Dark Sandstorm is owchies for everyone involved
- Makoto is alarmed + unsettled by Sandslash trying to tear out Arcanine's throat - the illusion disguise helps hide their expression, but there's still an unsettled hitch in their breath from it.
- Tsukiko uses Dazzling Gleam to hit all enemies; Medicham uses Detect to avoid it
- Nobusuma and the Ninjask have an aerial fight above - Ninjask hits him with Night Slash, Nobusuma hits with Air Slash, bug is left hanging on by a thread. Nobusuma also dodges a Dragon Tail from the Salamence
- Arcanine dodges a Charge Beam from Haguru, retreats from the 'front lines' to use Howl to buff enemy team.

Thankfully for Makoto Kurumi, Gavin is far too focused on the battle to notice their unease, with or without the ILLUSION. Should they look at him, they might notice the intensity with which he watches each action taken by their foe.[break][break]

The blood doesn't seem to disturb him in the least.[break][break]

"Excellent," he says softly, as the DAZZLING GLEAM lights up the battlefield. The verbal command gives him enough warning to shield his eyes — warnings not reciprocated, for the underboss commands his Pokémon with clicks, whistles, and hand gestures.[break][break]

He frowns as the Arcanine HOWLS a second time; if they didn't take care of that problem, they'd be fighting a much harder battle. Medicham was unhurt, and thus Gavin chooses to target the Arcanine and Salamence, seeing that Makoto's Crobat had the Ninjask on the back foot.[break][break]

Tyranitar's STONE EDGE finishes the job that Sandslash had started, sharp spears of rock slamming up from the ground to take the canine unawares. It was clear from the brutality of the attack that it had been aiming to kill... but its trainer recalls it in the nick of time, clear distress written on their face. They don't send out another.[break][break]

Following Cryogonal's FREEZE-DRY, Sandslash lets loose another BLIZZARD, bringing the dragon down as well as damaging the others.[break][break]

Though its stats had been lowered somewhat, its PURE POWER in combination with the HOWLING make the Medicham a deadly opponent. Left unchecked, it targets Gavin's Sandslash with an AXE KICK. The attack proves devastating, bringing down the shrew.[break][break]

Assessing the battlefield, Gavin decides against sending out another.[break][break]

Ninjask, attempting to prolong its survival, shivers and splits into duplicates with its DOUBLE TEAM.

The enemy was beginning to falter - even as Gavin's Sandslash is taken out, the arcanine and salamence both fall alongside. The remaining pokemon on League's side are thoroughly outnumbered - and yet, the trainers who still remain are either reluctant to send out pokemon against the murderous intent of Gavin's pokemon, or have no additional pokemon.

The Medicham has no hesitation in following up after taking down Gavin's Sandslash - its eyes immediately set on Haguru, as if knowing the threat that the klingklang could pose to the weakened Ninjask with Lock On, and also seeing it as an easy target. Charging forth, it strikes at them with another empowered Axe Kick, sending the klingklang plummeting into the ground - KO'd.

Makoto mutters a curse under their breath, returning the steel-type to their pokeball - but doesn't send out an additional pokemon. It wasn't necessary, when there were still four pokemon collectively, between them and Gavin.

Retaliations were quick to follow though. Tsukiko would let loose a Dazzling Gleam that - though it did not hit the true Ninjask - did clear out a number of the illusory duplicates that it had made with Double Teams. The Medicham would be left stunned by this - which left it open to the one-two punch of Nobusuma striking it with a flurry of Air Slashes, KO-ing it in turn!

The remaining Ninjask, clearly ready to bail from this match, would begin to back away - using another Double Team in hopes of avoiding the beatdown that was sure to approach...

TLDR

- Medicham uses Axe Kick on Haguru; who is KO'd
- Tsukiko uses Dazzling Gleam - breaking some of the illusory Ninjasks and getting some damage in on Medicham
- Nobusuma finishes Medicham off with Air Slashes, KO-ing it
- Ninjask is spooked, backs away and uses Double Team again in hopes of avoiding injury.

Tyranitar bellows in answer, and the ocean's SURF crashes suddenly through the cave, flooding out the bugs. Forced to break from its clones to avoid being similarly swept away, the real Ninjask is identifiable.[break][break]

It HARDENS its shell in the hopes of withstanding another blow.[break][break]

Cryogonal takes time to RECOVER from wounds sustained in an earlier fight; Gavin offers Makoto a nod, trusting them and their Pokemon to finish off the final foe.[break][break]

Opening his coat to display the numerous pokeballs at his belt, he smirks at the flagging officers.[break][break]

"We can keep fighting. Can you?"

As waves crash in the cavern, it's unavoidable that Tsukiko gets caught up in the tumultuous waters - though Nobusuma is just able to avoid being pulled into the tide, wings beating hard. The ninetales yelps as she's slammed into one of the walls - although the Aurora Veil helps to soften the brunt of the blow. Really, it seems like the worst of it all was that Tsukiko looked like a sad soggy cat now - her fur dripping wet and hanging low.

Gavin's nod was all that Makoto needed though - and they'd make the call. "Finish it."

Nobusuma dove at the Ninjask - letting loose Air Slash after Air Slash at the bug-type, who desparately attempted to duck and weave out of the way. However, between the prior attacks and the ever-present storm of crystals, it was beginning to tire, bit by bit...

... Leaving it open to being sniped out of the air, by a well-aimed Ice Beam from Tsukiko. It'd begin to fall to the ground - but was recalled before it hit it.

And thus, the enemy's side of the field was clear - and as Gavin made his taunt, they blanched. Slowly, surely, they'd begin to back away - before they proceeded to turn tail and run, back the way they came..!

Once the three trainers were out of sight and earshot, Makoto would let out a heavy exhale - recalling Nobusuma and Tsukiko both. They should probably find some sort of outpost, and give their pokemon a proper quick check-up before they resumed their work. "Thank you for the help, sir." Makoto spoke, glancing over to the Underboss - they were pretty sure if he hadn't shown up, they'd have to retreat back into Deep Sea.

But now, they were half watching to see what he'd do, half waiting to see if he wanted anything of them.

TLDR

- Tsukiko is hit by Surf cause friendly fire - Nobusuma manages to fly high enough to avoid it. Aurora Veil prevents some damage, and Tsukiko comes out of it looking like a sad soaked cat.
- Nobusuma and Tsukiko double-team the Ninjask with Air Slash and Ice Beam to KO it
- The Leaguers are spooked and retreat
- Makoto thanks Gavin for the help - watching/waiting to see if he does anything, or if he wants anything from them.

Tyranitar's arsenal was full of attacks that would harm enemy and ally alike; she was one of his most vicious fighters, and one of the most unforgiving for it. The titan is unapologetic as Makoto Kurumi's poor Ninetales is slammed against the wall.[break][break]

Cryogonal is entirely impassive, seeming more construct than Pokemon as it spins idly at Gavin's side.[break][break]

At last, the enemy turns to flee.[break][break]

Tyranitar roars, clearly eager to pursue, but a sharp whistle and hand gesture from Gavin keeps her at bay. She grumbles, irate, before swirling shadow swallows both Pokémon.[break][break]

Turning to Makoto, Gavin offers them another nod.[break][break]

"Of course. You fight well, especially that Ninetales." His lip twitches, betraying dry humour as he adds, "My apologies for the unscheduled bath."[break][break]

Water still floods around his boots, kept at bay by the waterproof material.[break][break]

"Will you be all right from here, or do you need an escort to camp?" A DHELMISE appears from the shadows with PHANTOM FORCE. Blood red seaweed wraps around an ancient, rusted anchor. The Pokémon radiates a subtle malice - a SHADOW, like his others. "Eurydice could take us. I never got your name."[break][break]

He offers a hand. "Gavin Merlino."

Despite themself, they can't help but make a surprised laugh - not expecting the humor offered. "Thank you, sir." They respond to the compliment - smiling as they add "She may end up sulking a little - but she'll bounce back quick, I'm sure." And indeed, Tsukiko was a versatile pokemon in a fight - though they had their thoughts on how to improve upon it... A move for some type coverage, for one.

Tsukiko, however, was indeed sulking - and after shaking herself the best she could to get rid of some of the excess water, would stick her tongue out at Makoto and Gavin both. Did they know how much of a pain it was, for your fur to clump together all stiff when it got wet and then froze, because of course you're an ice type that produces snow? Maybe if the two of them stuck their heads in a freezer after a shower, they'd realize it too!

Nobusuma, meanwhile, just glanced to Tsukiko, then sighed and shook his head... At least, until she made a point to shake herself off in his direction, the cold spray drawing a half-yelp half-shriek out of the crobat!

But in any case, there came the question of heading to camp - and for a moment, Makoto considered the offer. On one hand, it might seem more responsible and independent of them to politely decline... Though on the other hand, a number of their pokemon were either tuckered out or KO'd, and who knew what else may lay on the path...

"... I would appreciate an escort," Makoto decided - figuring that the sooner they could rest up (and the less trouble they had along the way,) the better. Reaching out for the handshake, they'd also introduce themself. "Makoto Kurumi. Thank you again, Merlino sir."

Much as he respected resilience, Gavin also respects someone willing to ask for help. It was something he struggled with himself; perhaps the very reason he admired the trait in others.[break][break]

As they give their consent, Gavin's Dhelmise uses its PHANTOM FORCE to create another shadowy tear in reality.[break][break]

"It can be jarring if you've never experienced it," the underboss cautions. "Might make you feel a bit sick."[break][break]

To one like Gavin, who frequently travelled this way, it's not too different from missing a step on the stairs. A brief tug in his gut as he steps into the shadow, and then he's standing at the edge of the Rocket base camp on an islet near Dewford.[break][break]

The grunt on duty whirls toward the shifting shadows, then relaxes at the sight of him.[break][break]

"I've got to head back into the Rift," Gavin tells Makoto, once they're through. "I look forward to working with you in the future."[break][break]

With a final nod, he steps back into the PHANTOM FORCE and the shadows close behind him.
